With NEET PG examination coming most likely from next year (2013-14), medical graduates are left with only five PG Medical Entrance Examinations other than NEET. A brief overview of those exams is discussed in detail in this article. NEET was proposed with an idea to eliminate the business of selling PG medical seats at a higher price that is being carried out by various medical colleges throughout the country.

PG Medical Entrance Examinations

NEET PG

  • As per the NEET Exam conducted in November 2012, it is an exam of 3 hour duration with 240 questions
  • Pattern of questions is quite common as we see in other exams; Simple straight single line MCQs
  • The actual proposed pattern of questions by MCI for NEET PG Exam can be seen in MCI Website, which is quite different from all the PG Medical Entrance Examinations until today, which would be definitely tougher than all other exams
  • As said in the previous editorial, NEET PG: Pros and Cons, many things have to be cleared yet about NEET exam especially for Andhra Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir which had article 371D

AIIMS

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, conducts exam for Post Graduate admissions twice a year in May and November
  • It has 200 multiple choice questions to be answered in 3 hours
  • Negative marking of 1/3rd mark for every wrong answer is enforced
  • For the first time they are conducting both online & offline (paper based) examinations from this May 2013;  Candidates have to specify which mode he/she prefers to take
  • Paper based exam usually conducted at only five centers in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati). No information as of now about the online test centres

  • Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, like AIIMS conducts exam for PG Medical Admissions twice a year in May and November
  • This is entirely different exam pattern-wise with Multiple Choice Questions where multiple options may be correct, with percentile based merit list
  • 250 questions are to be answered in a 3 hour span for total 100 marks
  • Marks are calculated by the formula – (x/a)-(y/b); x & y are the number of right and wrong answers respectively. a&b are the actual number of right and wrong options provided in the examination

DNB

  • Diplomate in National Board, New Delhi
  • This is similar to NEET exam this year, simple and straight single line 180 questions to be answered in 3 hours conducted online twice a year (timing in the year may vary)
  • DNB is different from MD/MS courses in the aspect that DNB seats are available in corporate hospitals where there are no attached medical colleges and some institutes like Railway Hospitals, Trust Hospitals etc
  • All India Counselling will be held in New Delhi for all the seats in different states
  • There is a notion that DNS is inferior to MD/MS when it’s not recognized by Medical Council of India. But now DNS is recognized by MCI. So, people are taking up DNB much more frequently than in the past
